WILDERNESS ADVENTURE PRESS MAPS: COLORADO GRAND MESA NORTH RIVER The Grand Mesa is the largest flattop mountain in the world, spanning over 500 square miles. It encompasses about 300 lakes, of which about 100 hold wild trout. Many of the others are stocked. Some of the fishier lakes include Jumbo Lake, Sunset Lake, Beaver Lake (the lone lake with Colorado River cutthroats), Mesa Lake, South Mesa Lake, Lost Lake, Griffith Lake #1, the Bull Creek reservoirs, Island Lake, the Granby lakes, Ward Creek Reservoir, Eggleston Lake, Trout Lake, Vela Reservoir, Bonita Reservoir, Big Creek Reservoir, Bonham Reservoir, Silver Lake, Cottonwood Reservoir #1 and Big Meadows Reservoir. Vega and Jerry Creek reservoirs are also worth a visit. Many of the lakes are off the beaten path theres a good shot a finding a hidden gem if you hike a little ways. There are six different species of trout on the mesa: brown, rainbow, brook, Colorado River cutthroat, Snake River cutthroat and splake. Twenty-inchers are not terribly uncommon. Grayling can also be found here and there. Ice out is a crapshoot here it depends upon spring conditions. Usually by mid-June, the forest service roads are usable, but sometimes earlier, sometimes later. Being that the mesa is around 10,000 feet in most places, wintry squalls are not unheard of in all seasons. Dress appropriately. Using a float tube is an effective way to approach most of the lakes here. Cruisers are much easier to get at from the middle of the lake. Be aware that the reservoirs can become dewatered by summers end. There are special regulations on many of the lakes so acquaint yourself with the regulations brochure before wetting a line. Refer to the Flyfishers Guide to Colorado for comprehensive fishing coverage of the Grand Mesa. ISBN: 0-WAP-16017-0 publish date: 06/30/2011
