ACROSS THE FENCE - THE SECRET WAR IN VIETNAM: EXPANDED EDITION For eight years, far beyond the battlefields of Vietnam and the glare of media distortions, American Green Berets fought a deadly secret war in Laos and Cambodia under the aegis of the top-secret Military Assistance Command VietnamStudies and Observations Group, or SOG.Across the Fence takes you deep into the jungle for the author's first tour of duty with SOG at FOB 1, Phu Bai, at what would eventually become known as Command and Control North (CCN), which unquestionably ran the "hottest" targets of any of the C&C camps. Meyer's job was running recon missions across the border into the North Vietnamese Army's sanctuaries in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. Time and again, Meyer and his team risked all to gather intelligence and disrupt the NVA's supply chain that snaked its way down the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This expanded edition has 337 pages, with more than 50 photos added, photos that weren't available 10 years ago when the original edition was released. Meyer delivers more missions, as well as more stories of other SOG recon teams, in vivid and gritty detail. This book belongs on the shelf of any serious student of military history, the Vietnam War, and SOG. It paints an honest picture of the men of SOG who risked their lives on a daily basis on missions they weren't allowed to talk about.WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:"As the commander of SOG, I can say that Across the Fence accurately reflects why the secret war was hazardous for our troops and so deadly for the enemy."Major General John K. Singlaub (USA Ret.)"Black ops told with the terrifying clarity that only one who was there can tell it."W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IVABOUT THE AUTHOR:John Stryker "Tilt" Meyer arrived at FOB 1 Phu Bai in May 1968, where he joined Spike Team Idaho, which transferred to CCN in Da Nang in January 1969. He remained on ST Idaho to the end of his tour of duty in late April, and later rejoined ST Idaho from October 1969 to April 1970. He returned to the States, completed his college education, and worked as a journalist for newspapers in New Jersey and Southern California for more than 30 years. He coauthored (with fellow SOG veteran John Peters) On the Ground: The Secret War in Vietnam. Today, Meyer is an associate director at Interfaith Community Services, a nonprofit organization that maintains 170 beds for homeless veterans in north San Diego County.
